In July 1947 debris was recovered from a ranch near Roswell. The U.S. Army initially announced that it had recovered a 'flying disc,' then quickly described the material as a weather balloon. Decades later, the incident became the center of claims that an extraterrestrial craft and bodies had been recovered.
