Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia was built between 1858 and 1881 on the Kirkbride model, opened to patients in 1864, was designed for about 250 people, and by the 1950s held more than 2,400 before finally closing in 1994. Today the preserved complex openly separates history tours from paranormal programs and advertises ghost tours and overnight investigations. The asylum says guests, staff and television crews have reported apparitions, unexplained voices and sounds, and other anomalous activity. Popular lore assigns names to recurring presences—including the child spirit “Lily”—but detailed biographies attached to those spirits vary across retellings and should not be treated as established patient records without primary documentation. The haunting reputation is therefore well documented as a modern visitor tradition, while the supernatural explanation remains unverified. Public historic and paranormal tours operate on scheduled dates.
