Stanley Hotel Haunting

The Stanley Hotel opened in Estes Park in 1909 under Freelan Oscar Stanley and his wife Flora, and it later became inseparable from American supernatural pop culture after Stephen King stayed there and drew inspiration for The Shining. The hotel itself now distinguishes its documented history from folklore through separate historic and ghost tours. Long-running reports include piano music attributed to Flora Stanley, apparitions or figures associated with the founders, unexplained sounds and children’s footsteps or laughter on upper floors, and stories centered on rooms such as 217. A University of Colorado Denver historical study of the hotel’s ghost lore recorded staff testimony about Flora’s piano and other apparitions, demonstrating that the stories are genuinely part of the property’s modern oral history even though they do not establish a supernatural cause. The Stanley remains an operating hotel with official daytime history tours, nighttime ghost tours and Shining-themed tours.
