The Mission Inn grew from the Miller family’s 19th-century Riverside boarding house. Frank Augustus Miller expanded it dramatically, opening the first wing of the present hotel in 1903 and continuing construction until the complex occupied an entire city block. By 1931 it contained four major wings, courtyards, towers, chapels, arches and winding stairways.
Its complexity helped create a second history: the haunted Mission Inn. Guests and storytellers have reported phantom footsteps, disembodied voices, cold spots, unexplained touches and apparitions. Frank Miller and members of his family are frequently named in the stories. The Bridal Suite, upper floors and underground rooms—often called “catacombs”—recur in modern accounts.
The Mission Inn Foundation has offered haunted walking tours that pair eerie stories with Riverside history. This proves the haunting tradition is culturally established, but not that ghosts are real. Official historical materials firmly document the building’s age, expansion, closures, restoration and landmark status; paranormal claims remain anecdotal.
