Llano del Rio: The Abandoned Utopian Colony in the Mojave

THE EXPERIMENT\n\nLlano del Rio was founded by lawyer and socialist politician Job Harriman after his 1911 Los Angeles mayoral defeat. The colony formally launched in 1914 on the southern edge of the Mojave Desert. At its height it approached roughly a thousand members and attempted to build a cooperative economy based on shared production rather than competition.\n\nWHAT THEY BUILT\n\nColonists constructed a hotel, meeting spaces, water works, agricultural facilities and other structures using local stone and lumber. The community farmed, operated workshops and published its own material. The settlement depended heavily on water from Big Rock Creek and on an economy that remained difficult to connect to outside markets.\n\nWHY IT FAILED\n\nWater proved unreliable, the colony remained isolated from major transportation and legal and financial problems accumulated. By late 1917 many members were preparing to relocate to Louisiana. The California organization collapsed in 1918. Some families moved on to establish New Llano.\n\nTHE RUINS TODAY\n\nStone walls, foundations, a silo and traces of the colony remain visible near Highway 138. The site is California Historical Landmark No. 933, but ownership is mixed between Los Angeles County and private parcels. The surviving ruins are not an invitation to trespass.\n\nTHE ODDKNOWN ANGLE\n\nLlano del Rio does not need a supernatural story to be eerie. It is a physical remnant of an attempt to build an alternative society in the desert, abandoned after only a few years.
