Giant Rock and the Integratron: The Mojave Desert’s UFO Contact Center

GIANT ROCK BEFORE THE UFO ERA\n\nGiant Rock is a massive freestanding boulder north of Landers. In the 1930s prospector Frank Critzer excavated living space beneath it. Critzer died in a dynamite explosion in 1942 during a confrontation with authorities. George Van Tassel later moved to the area, operated an airstrip and cafe and turned Giant Rock into the center of a new UFO community.\n\nTHE CONTACT CLAIM\n\nVan Tassel said that in 1953 he experienced telepathic communication and a physical encounter with extraterrestrials. He later claimed that a being from Venus supplied information that inspired a machine capable of rejuvenation and other extraordinary effects. These claims were never scientifically verified.\n\nTHE SPACECRAFT CONVENTIONS\n\nFrom the 1950s through the 1970s, Van Tassel hosted annual Interplanetary Spacecraft Conventions at Giant Rock. The Huntington Library, which acquired a major archive of Van Tassel material in 2026, says the gatherings drew thousands of visitors and helped establish the Mojave Desert as a major center of postwar UFO culture.\n\nTHE INTEGRATRON\n\nVan Tassel hired architect Howard P. Hess in 1954 and began construction of the Integratron later in the decade. The domed wooden structure was substantially complete by 1960, but the machinery Van Tassel envisioned was never fully installed before his death in 1978. The building survived periods of disrepair, was restored by later owners and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.\n\nWHAT IS FACT AND WHAT IS CLAIM\n\nThe conventions, archive, building, Van Tassel’s writings and his role in UFO history are documented.
