THE GHOST TOWN\n\nCalico began during the Mojave silver boom in 1881. San Bernardino County records describe a mining district with hundreds of mines and a population that collapsed after silver prices fell in the 1890s and borax production later declined. Walter Knott purchased the town in the 1950s, restored much of it to an Old West appearance and donated it to San Bernardino County in 1966. California later recognized Calico as the state’s official Silver Rush Ghost Town.\n\nTHE HAUNTING TRADITION\n\nParanormal stories at Calico often focus on Lucy Bell King Lane, associated with the old general store and Lane House. Visitors and paranormal sites also report cold spots, shadowy figures, former miners, schoolhouse apparitions and unexplained sounds. Some modern accounts describe a woman in dark period clothing moving between the store and residence.\n\nHISTORY VERSUS FOLKLORE\n\nCalico is unusual because the setting is authentic but heavily restored. Only a limited number of structures are original; many others were reconstructed or altered during the Knott restoration. That matters when evaluating ghost stories tied to specific rooms or buildings.\n\nWHAT REMAINS UNEXPLAINED\n\nNo controlled evidence establishes that Calico is haunted. Yet the repetition of similar stories across visitors has made the paranormal layer part of the town’s modern identity. ODDKNOWN treats the mining history as documented and the apparitions, cold spots and voices as reported experiences.
