Bracken Fern Manor stands beside the Tudor House in Lake Arrowhead, part of the historic Club Arrowhead in the Pines complex. Local business records trace the complex to 1926. Later regional histories connect it to Prohibition-era gambling, illegal liquor and reputed organized-crime activity. Those stories helped create one of the San Bernardino Mountains’ best-known haunted-hotel traditions.
The central ghost story concerns “Violet,” described in paranormal retellings as a woman associated with the manor during an era when the property was rumored to function as a brothel. The legend says her lover was killed and that Violet later died by suicide. Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported violet-like perfume, shadow forms, unexplained movement and a feeling of being watched.
The physical property and its 1920s history are real; the darkest details are harder to verify. The Crestline Chamber of Commerce confirms the historic complex and present-day operating property. Claims involving Bugsy Siegel, a brothel called “The Crib,” Violet’s identity and specific deaths largely come from later local lore and paranormal sources, not contemporaneous police or coroner records.
